Planning a Cross Country Trip - Oh the decisions to be made!!

It's the middle of May and I'm finally done planning (well, pretty much) a bucket list trip around the United States. I'm doing it! My plan, as of right now, is to take around 8 weeks this summer to drive from Portland Maine ALL the way to the other Portland (and beyond) and back again. Now, I don't plan on making this a straight shot. I'm doing the southern part of the U.S. first, up through Utah, over to California and up the coast of the Pacific Northwest. Then I'm driving the northern route back. After it's all said and done, I will have driven about 13,000 miles in my little Kia Soul through 34 states and into Mexico and Canada for some added spice. This is what it looks like so far. Now I know you east coasters are wondering why I'm skipping all of those wonderful states on the right side. There are two very good reasons for that. Vancouver - Part 1: Chinatown, Gastown, Granville Island and Stanley Park

I already know I wish I had stayed longer but I did pack it in while I was in the Vancouver area. Here's a map of Vancouver to give you some perspective on the places I visited while there. First, I'm staying in an airbnb west of downtown but a quick ride by bus. After I checked in and chatted with the owners (who are so lovely and welcoming), I hopped onto the bus that took me to the edge of Chinatown so I could walk around the city. It was warm and sunny out (in the 80's) but seemed so much cooler because it has been SO HOT throughout my entire journey. I zigzagged around Chinatown and stumbled upon the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. What a beautiful oasis inside a bustling city. It was the first garden of its kind outside of China with winding paths, rocks, water lilies, koi and turtles in the pond and pagodas nestled beside lush green plants. Little Bighorn Battlefield and National Monument

As a history buff, visiting Little Bighorn has been on my list of places to visit and I'm glad I stopped on my way from Montana to Wyoming. It was not just informative; it was moving and poignant. When you first enter the park, you see Custer's National Cemetery where you walk along the graves of known and unknown veterans of our nation's wars, including women and children from frontier posts, Indian scouts and Medal of Honor recipients. You then walk up Last Stand Hill to the memorial for 7th Calvary soldiers who died on that hill. This is the view of the hill from the cemetery below. This monument is where Custer's remains (or what they thought were his remains) were laid to rest until they were moved to West Point. The story of this battle is quite vicious and gruesome!
